The Dirty Picture review: "Vidya sweeps us off our feet!!!"

Since the turn of the new millennium, India has undergone a sea of change in all spheres of life due to the influence of the Western world. Though various factors contributed to this inevitable turn of events, the film industry has to thank the one & only, Silk Smitha. In the 80's, to utter the word "sex" itself was considered taboo, so it was almost unimaginable to show skin on screen until Silk broke that mind set. Now Milan Luthria, decided to celebrate this sex siren in the form of a biopic titled "The Dirty Picture". So can Milan recreate the magic of his previous biopic "Once upon a time in Mumbai"???

Silk Smitha's life has been the talk of the film industry as it chronicled the meteoric rise of a highly motivated female unperturbed by anything until a point reaches where she presses on the self destruction mode. The film unfolds with Reshma (Vidya Balan) makes an escape from her home to fulfill her dream of becoming an actress. After facing numerous rejections, she finally lands the role of a seductive siren which catapults her to stardom & gives her the name "Silk".

Her romance or more appropriately, her sexual favours for the undisputed egoistical middle aged superstar, Suryakant (Naseeruddin Shah) lands her with numerous stereotypical roles much to the displeasure of noted film makers such as Abraham (Emraan Hashmi). Though how much ever provocative & bold she appeared, she yearned for the love of someone which eventually makes her dump Suryakant for whom she was nothing but an object of desire. At this juncture, Ramakant (Tusshar Kapoor) (Surya's brother), provides her with the support & love that she had hoped for. But things werent going to pan out as she had wished for. So what eventually destroys her career & life???

There is no doubt that Milan Luthria in the company of Rajat Arora has given a very praise worthy movie both in terms of content & performances. Just as in "Once upon a time..", the dialogues here are equally fantastic as it conveys a lot in a sly yet hard hitting way...be it Silk's speech at the award ceremony or her conversation with Abraham at the canteen. The first half was right on the money as it showcases the rise of Silk & subsequently the latter half on her fall. Though the second half does slacken off in the romantic sequences, it doesnt necessarily bore the audience as it has some hard hitting scenes. Vishal Shekhar does provide a decent soundtrack with "Oo la la" rendered by Bappi Lahiri & Shreya Ghoshal being a winner with the awesome choreography reminiscent of the 80s being the icing on the cake.

I have virtually no words to describe the brilliant performance by Vidya. Though she does lack the sultry look & sex appeal of Silk, Vidya hasnt left any stone unturned to get into the skin of the character both emotionally & physically. Naseeruddin Shah is an actor par excellence & here too, he reiterates the fact as to why he is considered as one of the best in the country. Tusshar does seem to be a miscast while Emraan Hashmi does manage to give a decent act in the limited screen space provided.

Verdict: The movie will have a blistering opening owing to its titillating promos & impressive star cast. There is no doubt that the impressive screenplay, smashing dialogues & Vidya's scintillating act will go a long way in making it a hit. In short, watch it without fail!!!

Rating: 3.5/5

Comedy is my forte: Vivekh

Vivekh has ventured to do a role with negative shades in Marichaa, a Kannada film. A name to reckon with in Tamil cinema, he has acted as comedian in several hundred films.

Asked whether he would venture to do the lead role, Vivekh says, ' I want to remain as comedian because comedy is an important ingredient of a film. No audience goes to toilet when a comedian appears on the screen. The audience goes to toilet or for smoking if they do not like a stunt sequence or song sequence'.

Asked about his ambition, the veteran comedian says, ' I want to complete green mission set by former president APJ Abdul Kalam who had advised me to encourage the planting of saplings. He advised me to promote the planting of saplings through films. As per his advice, I have joined hands with various non-governmental organisations. The planting of saplings programme began six months ago. The target was to plant 10 lakhs saplings but we have planted 11 lakh saplings. Kalam Sir will plant twelfth lakh sapling at a tsunami hit village near Kadalur by end of January 2012′.

Silk Smitha’s story in Tamil

Abhirami Ramanathan has procured the distribution rights of The Dirty Picture. He will distribute the film in Tamil Nadu and Kerala regions. The Dirty Picture is due to be released tomorrow and its Tamil version will also hit the screens simultaneously.

The film is based on the life of late actress Silk Smitha and therefore producer Ekta Kapoor has decided to release the Tamil version to attract the audiences to the theatres. Vidya Balan essays the role of Silk Smitha in the film with Naseeruddin Shah playing an important role. Milan Luthria has directed this film.

‘Kolaveri Di’ crosses I crore hits and counting

'Kolaveri Di' tops charts, with more than 10 million hits online. Dhanush's popularity in wielding the mike is sky rocketing. The actor's unassuming voice is creating magic from children to senior citizens who are enjoying the latest song 'Kolaveri Di' crooned by him. Set to tunes by new comer Anirudh in Aishwariya Dhanush's '3.'

This particular number 'Kolaveri Di' has created a rage in Tamil Nadu as well as outside the state, as far as Bollywood. The song recently crossed 10 million hits that too in less than two weeks after it released. Dhanush's down-to-earth voice and the casual attitude with which he approaches a song has created a new trend in film music.

'3′ sees Dhanush sharing on-screen space with Shruti Haasan. Right from the word "go" the film has been garnering attention for the names associated those who are behind and in front of the screen. The film is a breezy romantic entertainer with a fresh and a realistic take on romance.

I am not that ‘Nadigai’ : Sonia

Sonia Aggarwal is clear about two things. One is to start her second innings in a big way with 'Oru Nadigaiyin Vaakumoolam' and the other to act in meaningful movies which would offer her strong roles.

"Many wonder whether the story of Oru Nadigaiyin Vaakumoolam is based on my real life. I must say it is not inspired by any actress's life but a reflection of experiences of women in cinema industry," says the 'Kadhal Konden' actress.

Produced by 'Punnagai Poo' Geetha, the film is directed by Rajkrishna. "The whole unit was so friendly and they treated me like a member in their family. I am happy to make my reentry in Kollywood with such a good script and a nice team," Sonia adds.

On her future plans, she says, "I would like to be part of interesting subjects which would give me an opportunity to make use of my acting skills to the fullest possible extent. Films that would be liked by one and all are my priority."
