Manirathnam will be directing this film in Tamil alone. Earlier Manirathnam had directed films Raavanan and Aayutha Ezhuthu in Hindi and Tamil languages simultaneously but he has planned to direct Kadal in Tamil alone. He has decided to direct this film in Tamil alone because the screenplay speaks about the lives of Tamil fishermen.
The shooting of Kadal has commenced. The shooting of this film is taking place in a sea shore village called Manapad. Manapad is a coastal village which is 60 kms from Tuticorin. Rajiv Menon is handling the camera while A R Rahman is composing the music.
